BEHRANG, Apr 7 – In a significant move to bridge the gap between academic theory and high-tech industrial requirements, the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Kuala Lumpur, successfully conducted the “Basic Autonomous Vehicle Course” at Politeknik Sultan Azlan Shah (PSAS). This collaborative initiative marks a milestone in UTM’s mission to produce industry-ready graduates capable of navigating the complex landscape of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0). The program, led by the Electronic Systems Engineering Student Society (ELECSYS) and mentored by Programme Advisor, Ts. Dr. Mohd Fitri Mohd Yakub, gathered 24 ambitious engineering students for an intensive day of experiential learning. By utilizing the state-of-the-art autonomous vehicle workshop facilities at PSAS, UTM students were able to transcend traditional classroom boundaries and engage directly with cutting-edge mobility technologies.

Bridging Theory and Practical Mastery

As the automotive industry pivots toward intelligent systems, this course provided critical hands-on exposure to three core pillars of autonomous technology, namely Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), where students explored the principles of modern vehicle safety features; Autonomous Sensing Systems, led by expert instructor Dr. Maznah Ilyas Ahmad, which introduced participants to the practical configuration of hardware and sensor principles; and Autoware Integration, guided by Ts. Dr. Norazam Aliman, where students gained practical experience using industry-standard software to manage autonomous operations.

A Synergy of Academic and TVET Expertise

The choice of PSAS as a partner was strategic. As a premier Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) center, PSAS offers a conducive environment where students can apply theoretical knowledge to real-world platforms, such as the “AV Limo” autonomous vehicle. This collaboration not only enhanced technical competencies but also cultivated vital soft skills, including leadership, professional communication, and interdisciplinary teamwork. “This initiative is more than just a training session; it is a critical platform for our students to build professional portfolios that stand out in a competitive job market,” said the program organizers.
