KUALA LUMPUR, May 24 – In a collective effort to promote environmental sustainability, the College Student Council (JKP) of Kolej Siswa Jaya (KSJ), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Kuala Lumpur, collaborated with the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT), UTM Campus Sustainability (UTMCS) and Alam Flora (SWCorp Sdn. Bhd.) to organize a community outreach program under the banner “Menuju Kelestarian Hijau: CSR Alam Sekitar.” The initiative was held at the Public Housing (PA) of Desa Rejang housing area in Setapak and aimed to raise awareness of environmental issues in line with the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The program featured two main activities: a recycling drive in collaboration with Alam Flora and a soap-making workshop that utilized used cooking oil to produce eco-friendly solid soap. The recycling drive was held on 20 April 2025 and saw enthusiastic participation from the local community. Residents contributed various recyclable items, including plastics, paper products, aluminum cans, electronic waste, and used cooking oil. The drive successfully collected over RM1,074.51 worth of recyclable materials with total weight of 679.50kg, returning that value directly to the community. This initiative not only encouraged responsible waste disposal but also showcased the economic and environmental benefits of recycling.

On May 24, a second series of soap-making workshop was conducted at Foyer A, KSJ. The session was led by program advisor Ts. Dr. Zatil Izzah Ahmad Tarmizi and attended by participants from the People’s Housing Project (PPR) Desa Rejang community. Participants were introduced to various types of oils and learned how to repurpose used cooking oil into environmentally friendly soap. The session offered both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience, empowering attendees with sustainable living skills. These hands-on efforts highlighted the importance of environmental responsibility through practical, community-based engagement.

The workshop was officiated by Dr. Mohamed Azlan Suhot, Principal of KSJ, and was also attended by Hj. Ismail Shaari, Chairman of PA Desa Rejang, their secretary Suria Jamaludin; Chairman of Women’s Bureau, Rousnah Hamid and Chairman of Persatuan Kebajikan Insan Istimewa Jati Diri (PERJATI) Rosali Md Nasid. Generous sponsorship of food and beverages was graciously provided by Dato’ Haji Jawahar Ali of Ali Maju, represented by Mazlan Abdul Latif, ensuring the comfort and well-being of both participants and committee members throughout the program.

This impactful initiative not only fostered environmental awareness but also equipped the community with practical tools to support a greener future. Organizers hope this program will serve as a catalyst for more individuals and organizations to take part in conservation activities and continue the collective journey toward environmental sustainability.
