MMJD1133 Control Measures and Mitigation Planning

The Control Measures and Mitigation Planning (MMJD1133) is one of core courses offered in the Master of Disaster Risk Management (MDRM) Program by Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT). In the academic semester 2020/2021, this course will be offered in a virtual mode due to recent spike of COVID-19 pandemic in Malaysia and its control movement order (MCO) ordered by the Malaysia Government.

MDRM Program is co-designed and co-implemented with strategic partners to address the needs and demand of policy makers, disaster managers, professionals, practitioners, and future leaders in the field of disaster risk management (DRM), disaster risk reduction (DRR) and disaster resilience. This post-graduate course is one of important commitments of MJIIT in providing a high-impact higher education program to elevate the capacity of our mid-career professionals, advance their understanding and nurture our future disaster managers in the region towards supporting the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, New Urban Agenda, Paris Agreement, and 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Appointment of New DPPC Director

The Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT) proudly announces the appointment of Dr. Khamarrul Azahari Razak as the new Director of the Disaster Preparedness and Prevention Center (DPPC).

A technical expert on geohazard, including sediment-related disasters, Dr. Khamarrul continues to expand his expertise in areas including, multi-hazard and socio-economical risk assessment, disaster infomatics, DRR policy and community based disaster risk reduction.

He has been involved in both national and international research projects, including Landslide Hazard and Risk Mapping project for Mineral and Geoscience Department Malaysia (JMG), Disaster Resilient Cities, Federal Department of Town and Country Planning (PLAN Malaysia), UK funded “Technology Enhanced Stakeholder Collaboration for Supporting Risk- Sensitive Urban Development (TRANSCEND) Project and “Strengthening the Disaster Risk Reduction Capacity to Improve the Safety and Security of Communities by Understanding Disaster Risk (SeDAR)” funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

His network in disaster risk reduction is extensive – ranging from being a member of the Science and Technology Expert Panel for Disaster Risk Reduction (STEP) to the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), Prime Minister Department and internationally, member of Asian Civil Engineering Coordinating Council (ACECC) TC21 and Working Group on Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction, Global Young Academy Technical Committee.

During his tenure (June 2020 – May 2023) as the Director, he is expected to lead in further strengthening the 3 pillars of MJIIT’s Disaster Program, Education/Training (Master of Disaster Risk Management Program), Research (DPPC iKohza) and Field Practice as well as enhancing the “J” (Japan) and “I” (International) of MJIIT that will direct the way for DPPC to become a National Center and ASEAN DRR hub in the near future.

International Workshop and Field Practice on Disaster Risk Management (IDRM2020)
Date: 25 – 27 February 2020 (Tuesday – Thursday)
Venue: DreamWorld Resort, Kundasang (Sabah, Malaysia)

IDRM2020 aims at advancing science and technology for disaster risk reduction (DRR) to support the risk-informed sustainable development and investment in a changing climate. It promotes best practices, policies and directions for better implementing disaster risk management and mainstreaming DRR into development planning. This event offers practical guidance for aligning our DRR strategy with Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030. It addresses four themes: 1) Promoting Risk-Informed Sustainable Development and Investment; 2) Understanding Disaster Risk and Strengthening Risk Governance; 3) Redefining DRR and Resilience Strategies, 4) From Knowledge to Action: Learning to Go the Last Mile. We provide a multi-sectoral stakeholders platform to exchange views, issues, and challenges related to disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation and societal resilience.
