MMJD 1293 HEALTHCARE IN EMERGENCIES AND REHABILITATION

Course Synopsis :

This course aims to introduce the concepts of emergency risk management in the health sector under disaster situations. Some of the issues to be discussed will include emergency medical response to humanitarian, explosive and blast injuries in mass casualty management, water sanitation and hygiene (WASH) in emergencies, water and wastewater treatment technologies during disaster, post-disaster public health, psychological care and legal/ethical issues upon disaster in mass casualty management. In the process of identifying the impact of disasters, the course also intends to facilitate discussions on various options that could ensure continuity, quick recovery and resilience building in the health sector through good preparedness measures. Specific case studies will be shared from Japan, Malaysia and other countries.

Dr. Shinji Akitomi, MD is an Associate Professor of the Department of Traumatology and Critical Care Medicine, National Defense Medical College (under the Ministry of Defense) Japan.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Akitomi has obtained his medical license in 2002 and since has received his PhD in Medical Science (2014) and Civil and Environmental Engineering (2019). As an emergency medical doctor, he has been in the frontline of major incidents in Japan including the 2011 East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami (EJET) and Amagasaki derailment (aka JR Fukuchiyama Line derailment) accident that killed 162 passengers.

As a researcher, his interests are in Emergency Medicine: Acute and Critical Care Surgery, Intensive Care: Cytokine, Management of Severe Sepsis, Disaster Medicine: Confined Space Rescue and Medicine, Medical Management in Large Scale Earthquakes and Crisis Management: Incident Command Systems.

Datuk Dr. Mohamed Alwi Hj. Abdul Rahman is the Head of Emergency, Trauma and Disaster Management Department, Hospital Selayang.

The chief coordinator, Datuk Dr. Mohamed Alwi , is the first Malaysia emergency consultant to have sub specialized in disaster management. He has been involved nationally and internationally within this field of medical relief and response for many years. Among his notable relief efforts include Aceh, Indonesia; Tacloban, Philippines; Gaza and the Nepal earthquakes.

Datuk Dr. Mohamed Alwi is a graduate of University of Mysore, India (MBBS), University Sains Malaysia (Bachelor Emergency Medical) and University of Hertfordshire England (EPDM).

Dr. Hariyati Shahrima Abdul Majid is a Exco Member of MERCY Malaysia, a Volunteer Relief Organization that provides medical and humanitarian services locally and abroad.

Dr. Hariyati Shahrima Abdul Majid specializes in health psychology, humanitarian work (peace psychology), higher education and employability and volunteerism.

Dr. Hariyati Shahrima Abdul Majid is a graduate of University of Wisconsin-Madison, UK (BS, Psychology) and University of Surrey, UK (MS, PhD, Psychology).

Dr. Siti Uzairiah Mohd Tobi is a lecturer of Razak Faculty of Technology and Informatics (RFTI) UTM Kuala Lumpur.

Dr. Siti specializes in Facilities Management, Occupational Safety and Health Management and Sustainable Urban Design. She is also owns extensive knowledge on disaster risk management, particularly on disaster awareness and communication.

Dr. Siti is a graduate of UTM (BSc Hons Property Management and MSc Facilities Management) and Salford university, UK (PhD Facilities Management).
