Professional Training: Learned Disaster Management Cycle on the Healthcare System
Disaster Preparedness and Prevention Center (DPPC), Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is pleased to announce the successful completion of the Certified Professional Training (CPT) – Healthcare in Emergencies & Rehabilitation, held in conjunction with Master of Disaster Risk Management (MDRM) postgraduate program. The intensive training program ran form 6th May to 17th May with strong support from Emergency and Trauma Department of Hospital Selayang and invited subject matter experts to deliver the training’s module.

CPT’s participants and MDRM’s students are from diverse backgrounds, including healthcare, emergency response, and disaster risk management, participated in the training. The participants engaged in a series of lectures, workshops, and practical session designed to enhance their capabilities in managing healthcare systems during and after disasters.
The training session started with first module, webinar session on Emergency Response for Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive (CBRNE) Incidents by Datuk Dr Hj Mohamed Alwi Hj Abdul Rahman, Emergency Physician as well as Adjunct Professor at MAHSA University.
This was followed by modules led by Dr Hazlina Mohamad Noh, Head of Disaster Medicine Unit, Trauma and Emergency Department Hospital Selayang experts in disaster medicine. During those two days training, Dr Hazlina providing participants with valuable insights and training on Emergency Medical Response for Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive (CBRNE) Incidents.
Participants took part in scenario-based exercises that simulated CBRNE incidents, allowing them to apply their learning in an emergency response. These exercises focused on learning stations set-up by Selayang Emergency Department Team consists of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Airway Circulation, Triage, Case Scenario Simulation and Patient Transport. Participants also got a chance to see exclusive demonstration on decontamination for ambulatory and non-ambulatory at Hospital Selayang.
The training session continued with Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Response module conducted by Assoc. Prof Dr Aznah Nor Anuar, Deputy Director DPPC. The topics covered Responsibility of Disaster Risk Manager, WASH Life Support Kit, Innovation Technology and Water Quality Assessment. Participants reported a significant improvement in their understanding water quality assessment and microbial assessment. Participants took the water sampling at Resilience Living Lab, Hulu Langat Selangor and Masjid Al-Muttaqin, Kuala Lumpur. The analysis was done at Microbiological Water Laboratory assist by DPPC laboratory staff’s Mrs Nurain, Mr. Islah and Ms. Kamalia.
Other modules that were also included in this training package were Mental Health and Psychosocial Supports by Dr Hariyati Shahrima Abdul Majid, a Consultant Psychologist (Health) from IJN College and module on Management of Dead Bodies After Disaster by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Siti Uzairiah Mohd Tobi, Research Fellow of DPPC.
Mr Low Hann Sen, Anggota Sukarelawan Pertahanan Awam (ASPA), Angkatan Pertahanan Awam (APM), remarked, “The content of packaged a CBRNE course was wonderful with the lifesaving intervention include control hemorrhage, open airways (asphyxiation), chest decompression and injection antidotes”.
