MMJD 1153 RECOVERY AND RECONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT

Course Synopsis :

The course aims at exposing participants on topics pertaining to the comprehensive understanding in the management of recovery and reconstruction during the post-disaster and post-emergency stages. These are supported by modules to implement proper project management tools into the recovery and reconstruction of projects that focuses on both technical tools of project management and the human elements for buildings, facilities and services after the disaster and emergency. The course provides the management and organizational basis, plus the technological skills to undertake the effective project management of projects to meet the challenges of recovering and reconstructing the existing projects. Lesson on what makes a recovered and reconstructed project a success or failure will be discussed through structured teaching and case studies.

Norio Maki (Prof. Dr.)

Professor

Professor Norio Maki is a Professor of Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI) of Kyoto University.

Professor Maki specializes his research on disaster reduction planning, emergency management system, a long-term recovery process from major disasters including 1995 Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, 2004 Chuetsu Earthquake and 2011 East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami as well as on rehabilitation of urban settlements in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. He has also worked as an advisor for recovery planning and evaluation of recovery process for Ojiya City which had severe disaster damage from the 2014 Niigata earthquake.

Professor Maki is a graduate of Kyoto University (BS, MS, Dr.Eng.).

Professor Dato’ Ir. Ts. Dr. Zainai Mohamed is a Professor Emeritus of Razak Faculty of Technology and Informatics (RFTI) UTM Kuala Lumpur.

Professor Emeritus Dato’ Ir. Dr. Zainai was the founder Vice Chancellor/President (2006-2011) of Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK), the 19th public university in Malaysia. He obtained his PhD in Structural/Civil Engineering from the University of Cambridge, England in 1987. He has wide experience not only in teaching and research in Structural/Civil Engineering but also in engineering education, curriculum development across multidiscipline and management of higher education, and he is also a strong advocator to practice strategic management in delivering many tasks. He is a registered professional engineer (with Practicing Certificate) with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM).

Professor Emeritus Dato’ Ir. Dr. Zainai is a graduate of Strathclyde University (MSc & MSc) in Civil Engineering and University of Cambridge (PhD) in Structural/Civil Engineering.

Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Mohamad Syazli Fathi is a lecturer of Razak Faculty of Technology and Informatics (RFTI) UTM Kuala Lumpur.

Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Syazli specializes in construction management, project management, and management information system. His research interests are in the fields of construction programme, project management and context-aware computing. He also delivers project and safety management training to engineers and management team from various organisations. Prior to his academic career, Dr. Syazli work with private sector involved in managing private and national projects such as Malaysian flagship Telehealth project under Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC).

Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Syazli is a graduate of UTM (BEng Hons, MEng) and Loughborough University, UK (PhD Construction Management).

Senior Lecturer

Dr. Aizul Nahar Harun is a Senior Lecture at the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT) UTM Kuala Lumpur.

During his career, Dr. Aizul has worked in the area of land administration and project development as well as management of environment of the construction projects in both private and academic sectors. Until May 2009, and for three years, he was a Manager of Land, Property and Environment Management of the Special Project under the Corporate Planning and Development Division (CPDD), Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) and involved in development projects on East Coast Economic Region (ECER) Masterplan of Malaysia. Prior to that, he was attached to the Environmental Management Unit of Putrajaya Holdings Sdn. Bhd. He is a certified ISO14001 EMS auditor and a member of the Project Management Institute (PMI) US and Malaysia chapter as well as IEEE Internet of Things Community.

Dr. Aizul is a graduate of UTM (BSc. Land Administration and Development), UiTM (MSc. Integrated Construction Project Management) and Salford University, UK (PhD Construction Management).
