MMJD 1143 EMERGENCY RESPONSE PLANNING AND COMMUNICATION

Course Synopsis :
This course explores principles and practices of emergency response planning and communication and aims to look into ways to strengthen capacities of emergency response agencies and disaster-prone communities. Several case studies at regional, national and global levels dealing with emergency responses will be presented and discussed. Crucial aspects on communication planning, particularly in the context of improving Early Warning Systems (EWS) and information management for effective emergency response will be explained. Utilization of ICT technology as a tool for improving decision-making process that involves different levels of stakeholders will also be discussed.

Michinori Hatayama
Professor
Professor Michinori Hatayama is a Professor of Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI) of Kyoto University.
Professor Hatayama in recent years specialized his research on utilizing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Robotics Technology for Disaster Management. He has been conducting field works with local governments, regional organizations to strengthen disaster response at the community level. His recent studies have been on topics including Spatial Temporal Information System Using Normal and Emergency Situation and Implementation Technology for a Disaster Response Support System for Local Government.
Professor Hatayama is a graduate of Osaka University (BSc Science Control), Kyoto University (MSc Disaster Prevention Social Structure) and Tokyo Institute of Technology (PhD Computational Intelligence and System Science).
