MMJD 1113 INTEGRATED DISASTER MANAGEMENT

Course Synopsis :

This course aims to provide a comprehensive insight in defining disaster risk as a combination of hazard, exposure and vulnerability. Under several key international policy developments in disaster risk reduction (DRR), climate change and sustainable development, disaster management during response, recovery and preparedness are addressed as a transdisciplinary practice that integrates various issues and stakeholders from different sectors and levels to strengthen social resilience. Together with overview of major hazards observed in Malaysia, specific case studies from both Malaysia and Japan for mitigating flood, earthquake/tsunami and landslide disasters will be presented to discuss the issues and possible solutions to better cope with these natural disasters.

Professor Kuniyoshi Takeuchi is a Professor Emeritus of the University of Yamanashi and currently the Advisor of the International Centre for Water Hazard and Risk Management (ICHARM). 

Professor Takeuchi brings his rich experiences to the MDRM programme from building a world reputation as an exceptional scientist, charismatic teacher and influential leader based on his outstanding contributions to hydrological research, particularly in the field of water resources management, his role in educating young researchers through establishing both national and international academic programmes, his international leadership in the field of water sciences, especially related to UNESCO IHP and his extraordinary contributions to hydrological sciences as President of IAHS.

Professor Takeuchi is a graduate of University of Tokyo (BS, MS, Dr.Eng.) and University of North Carolina (PhD in Regional Planning).

Professor Azlan Adnan is a lecturer of School of Civil Engineering UTM Johor and one of the Disaster Preparedness & Prevention Centre (DPPC) associate members.

Professor Azlan Adnan is one of the prominent figures in Seismic Hazard and Risk Analysis in Malaysia. He currently holds position as Research Head of SEER (Structural Earthquake Engineering Research Group) and Deputy Dean of Bureau of Innovation and Consultancy, Department of Consultancy.

Professor Azlan is a graduate of California State University (BSc Civil Engineering), UTM (MSc Structural Engineering) and Illinois Institute of Technology (PhD joint program with UTM).

Associate Professor/JICA DRR Advisor

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Shohei Matsuura is a Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Expert in Disaster Risk Reduction at the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology UTM.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Matsuura brings his experiences as both practitioner and researcher in Disaster Risk Reduction from Asia-Pacific (Japan, Philippines, Vietnam, Fiji, etc.), Africa (Kenya, Tanzania) and South America (Brazil) regions. He has been involved in advising disaster management offices for developing DRR plans at national and local levels as well as assisting post-disaster countries in drafting national recovery and reconstruction plans.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Matsuura is a graduate of International Christian University, Japan (BA Liberal Arts), University of London, School of Oriental and African Studies, UK (MA Water Resource Management) and Kyoto University (PhD Global Environmental Studies).
