Over the past several years, the construction industry has seen enormous changes. From an industry steeped in conservative practices and narrowly scoped services, construction has moved to the forefront of design and construction profession. This requires that practitioners and students alike understand the many aspects of civil engineering world. In the Faculty of Civil Engineering, the Department of Structures & Materials, has been providing foundation and advance training to planning, structural analysis and design, materials analysis and construction managing to undergraduates and postgraduates since 1972. The department is highly concerned to provide excellent teaching, innovative research and dedicated services by maintaining a strong curricullum, qualified and committed staffs and outstanding facilities to meet the programs needs. The department undertakes the teaching of core subjects for Civil Engineering undergraduates which include the Mechanics of Structures & Materials and Mechanics of Statics & Dynamics. Apart from this, the department also attend to the teaching of a varied scope of subjects on the Analysis & design of Structures, Material Engineering and Construction Technology and Management. A selection of subjects which covers topics on Advanced Structural Analysis and Structural Design applications are also offered by the department as elective subjects and students are required to do 9 credit hours of these subjects during the final semesters of their undergraduate studies. In contributing towards the development of the construction industry, the department is actively involved with several construction related organisations and universities through academics links, research and consultancy services. |
