CNC turning produces parts by “turning” rod material and feeding a cutting tool into the turning material. In CNC turning the cutter can be fed into the rotating workpiece at a variety of angles and many tool shapes can be used. CNC turning provides an economical way to make parts that are commonly symmetrical about an axis of revolution (e.g. a chess pawn). Shapes that can be made using CNC turning include a variety of plain, taper, contour, fillet and radius profiles plus threaded surfaces. Although many turned parts use a single axis of revolution, there can be multiple axis to allow more flexibility (e.g. camshafts). Like the principle of the turning lathe, FIXED-TURNING® is based on the simultaneous shifting of a single-point cutting tool around two axes (x, z). Unlike the lathe where the piece rotates, FIXED-TURNING® sees the tool rotating beyond its two axes (x, z) while the piece (cylinder head) remains still. The tool, piloted by a numerical system, has the capacity to describe the longest profiles (within the limit of the spindle) together with the most complex ones, including radii, straight lines and diverse concave or convex curves. Like the precision lathe, FIXED-TURNING® tool machines the most complex shapes with the highest precision. FIXED-TURNING® carries out different operations, including curves, straight lines, inclined in all the directions. The NEWEN® numerical control pilots the shifting of the tool so that the cutting section remains identical regardless of the portion of the machined profile. A powerful computer continuously calculates the optimal trajectory of the tool so that the cutting efforts are regular and reduced to a minimum. Every single shaving calculated from a fraction of a second to a fraction of a second is produced in such way that no fluctuation of the cutting efforts can disrupt the balance and the flexibility of the spindle. Cams Make-Pro 25 is a SOFT-ENGINE device for cam lift acquisition. The cam lift is measured point by point vs the instantaneous rotation angle (equal to cam angle). The data store and result management software (“CAMS MAKE-PRO”) shows the measured data as diagrams and charts, and there is the possibility to compute also, speed and acceleration, both these quantities are derived from cam lift, the cam profile and its construction data, X-Y coordinates and polar coordinates, possibility to export data as Excel file (datasheet compatibility), possibility to export data as DXF file (CAD software and cutting-machines compatibility). The working principle is very simple: arrange the cam-shaft in the mechanics support, start the PC and make a complete rotation of the cam. The rotation device can be a simple knob or it can be managed by an electric motor. The software manages all the aspects of test: found the zero, measures the cam lift during the rotation, computes the cam profile and its construction data and exports these data to the CAD and cutting-machines most common file formats. The cam lift acquisition device “CAMS MAKE-PROF 25” is used by people having to produce cams and by tuners and engine constructors to replicate an existing cam to obtain their construction data. Software can export the constriction data as cutting machines and CAD software files, and moreover, it’s possible to communicate with other SOFT-ENGINE software (firstly 4TBASE), to test the measured cam and use it in our 4-stroke engine simulation software.
