Course Synopsis :<\/strong><\/h3>\nThis course emphasizes the nature of underlying risk factors that can greatly affect the most vulnerable populations in case of disasters. It focuses on identifying risks and control measures to reduce risk through mitigation planning in all phases in the Disaster Management Cycle. It explains about links of disaster risks with factors including climate change, development practicies and public awareness and theoretical and practical ways in which resilience to disasters can be built at the local levels. Assessment for planning Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and options for taking structural and non-structural measures will be discussed. As a case study, lessons from the 2011 East Japan and Earthquake will be featured.<\/p>\n

Professor Kenichi Tsukahara is a Professor of Kyushu University in the Faculty of Engineering, Urban System Engineering.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\nProfessor Tsukahara is a specialist in Regional Science, Infrastructure Development and International Cooperation brining research and fieldwork experiences in areas including Database Development for Disaster Risk Reduction, Efficient Land Use Management with Sustainable Infrastructure Provision and Disaster Risk Reduction in Depopulated Disaster-prone Communities. Outside of Japan he has been involved in research projects such as Effective Water Supply System for Low Income Households in Asian Developing Countries and Evaluating Effectiveness of Public Service Provision. Prof. Dr. Roslan Zainal Abidin is the President and Vice-Chancellor of Infrastructure University Kuala Lumpur.
<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\nProf. Roslan is a widely recognized expert and leader in landslide and hydrological research. He has published and presented more than 200 technical papers at various national and international conferences, seminars and workshops, and produced three patented products \u2014 the ROM Scale, ROSE Index and Rainfall-Soil Chart \u2014 all of which are related to environmental issues, particularly disaster forecasting and management. He is an active member of several academic societies in the Geoscience field. He is the Director of Disaster Preparedness and Prevention Centre (DPPC).

\r\n Course Synopsis:<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n \r\n This course emphasizes the nature of underlying risk factors that can greatly affect the most vulnerable populations in case of disasters. It focuses on identifying risks and control measures to reduce risk through mitigation planning in all phases in the Disaster Management Cycle. It explains about links of disaster risks with factors including climate change, development practicies and public awareness and theoretical and practical ways in which resilience to disasters can be built at the local levels. Assessment for planning Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and options for taking structural and non-structural measures will be discussed. As a case study, lessons from the 2011 East Japan and Earthquake will be featured.<\/span><\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\n\u00a0\r\n \r\n\r\n
